7. Down needs tweaked

Second time lucky…

When we first did downstairs, we took a different approach to upstairs, as unlike the upper floor where we do DJ/Club shows exclusively, downstairs we needed to be more versatile.

We do mainly DJ shows etc., down there too, but we also often have live bands, burlesque shows, dance classes, Mc, or spoken word shows & a myriad of other crazy artistic & charity related stuff.

We had the bass speakers positioned at first, so they were throwing out from the front of the stage.

Due to having to constantly tweak the stage layout to accommodate the wide variety of different shows we have on down there, we ended up constantly having to hump speakers about.

Sound at this level of investment is a science. A science that doesn’t like it’s stuff moved about too often…

So we eventually chose abandon the front of stage bass caper & move the stack back over to the side of the room. Where things were, pre the original install.

This messed with the overall sound balance of the room somewhat & we addressed that with the help of our chum Angus from Serenity Soundsystem.

He runs Common Unity too & sorted us mates rates on a long term loan of some extra gear we put in, to add back the bit of ‘kick’ we’d lost, through having to reposition the bass speakers.

The sound was then great again down there, but we always knew we could make it better…

Effectively running two systems in there instead of one, meant that we had to have double outputs from the mixer & use two separate master volume knobs to marry all our Void kit with Serenity’s.

Easily doable, great sound quality, but not absolutely the best it possibly could be. So it was rethink time & changes came…
