Tonight the WHQ Uplifting Groove is chuming up with the West End Refugee Service. We are doing this because we would like you to know more about the important work they do.
Further down the page is all about the Club & the music we will be spinning tonight etc & this next bit introduces the Charity…
The West End Refugee Service (W.E.R.S.) is a registered charity (no. 1077601). & was established in Newcastle in1999. They provide a range of support services for asylum seekers in a friendly, welcoming environment.
Life for asylum seekers in the UK is tough. Many have been tortured, imprisoned or raped in their home country & all have suffered bereavement & separation from family & friends.
The situation is then made worse by the many problems faced by asylum seekers in Britain ; low income, social isolation, racial harassment, unemployment, prolonged separation from family, difficulties with cultural adaptation & the fear of being returned to dangerous situations, should their asylum applications be unsuccessful.
It can be hard for asylum seekers & refugees to feel that they belong in their new communities. They often get totally unjustified bad press, simply because ludicrous stories about them sell papers.
Much more needs to be done to create an inclusive & welcoming society which recognises the enormous contribution to the UK that refugees can make.
We all need to put ourselves in their shoes for a moment - & speak up for them.
The W.E.R.S. Approach, has been to establish services which are not provided for Asylum seekers & refugees as part of their statutory support. These address their urgent practical needs & are provided alongside other services, which are designed to improve their well being & psychological health.
These includes providing drop in sessions staffed by multi lingual support staff & volunteers, to give advice & support. They also run a clothing store, offering good quality clothing, bedding, kitchen equipment & essentials like that.
Between 150 & 180 people visit the store each week & everything there is donated by supporters of the charity.
There is a hardship fund to help people who are destitute & this too is funded purely from donations & fund-raising activities.
Whist the hardship fund & clothing store help with practical needs, the charity also runs a Befriending Scheme & Counselling Service to offer emotional support. They also engage with schools, to educate young people about the true situation asylum seekers find themselves in.
