Halloween, Valentines Day & New Years Eve are the most amazing nights of the year here at WHQ. So, every year we throw the best & spookiest Halloween party in the city, by miles…
All our chums dress up & we have a little mini election. The person voted to have the best costume wins £100.00 in cash & in 2009, they also won two of our brand new white & black WHQ hoodies & two tickets to our insane New Years Eve bash. So it’s always a nice little package if you win.

Also to everyone who came to the Halloween Party, thank you too. The World Headquarters loves you & has enjoyed our little election.
All the contenders from this year are featured below, just scroll down. We gave them all names & added a few choice observations of our own to aid the voting process.
We also ran voting concurrently, on our World HQ facebook photo album pages.
A lot of voting happened on Facebook, but as not everyone has a fbk account we wanted to host the snaps here too, where we could add a bit more text & pass one of two choice comments of our own.
We tried to be sure as many people as possible got a chance to vote & once some of the contenders cottoned on that they might just win, things really started to hot up!
Last year we had people voting from all over the world, it really was insane & this year has way exceeded last.
You can still add any observations, praise, critisism, whatever you fancy really in the comment section below.

Golden Girls & Vampire victim. The friendly faces of everyday spookiness.
She Devil & Frankenstein/Hulk Hybrid. We like the bolt & the assimilation of two fairly spooky characters in one outfit. As for She Devil…? She quite simply, must try harder.
Hand Stitched Pumpkin. Bless!
Four Peacocks in Drag. Extra marks for teamwork & originality of name surely, but & it’s a big but… Is it actually spooky?
The Three Pilots. Again lacking in spookiness, but the team ethic is strong again, we like!
Mrs Santa. Yes, kinda, but a little early in the year Mrs… Like three flippin’ months…? Did you not know it was a Halloween party? With all due respect Mrs. Santa, we doubt you have a lump of lard, in a towering inferno’s chance of winning this competition.
Minnie Mouse. An excellent ‘Ooh matron’ type pose & as technically, many people (& most elephants), are actually very scared & spooked out by mice… Minnie scores with an intelligenty constructed & somewhat unexpectedly topical, spooky costume result.
The Obligatory Scary Clown. Will he lose points for not having his standard issue, silly Clown boots on…? Only you can decide.
Camera Wielding Zombie & Mime Girl. Extra marks for enthusiasm recommended for Camera Weilding Zombie, as she looks as though she is gonna bite a big chunk outta Mime Girl, in the true spirit of Halloween.
Al Capone (apparently). A bit poor really… Sorry Al mate, but where’s the scar..? Now had you been Zombie Al Capone we’d be with you on this. Too clean cut & terminally unimaginative, we think he may have rushed this a little.
Sadaam, Clockwork Oranger & Purple Spook. We know it’s a mask & mask = cop out, but you gotta hand it to Sadaam. It’s a really good look… Purple Spook too, seems to be just shading it from Clockwork Oranger, as she has a quality dishevelled Halloween facial expression going on.
Real Live Emo. Or is it a costume? Nice touch with the self harm, slightly weak on the fringe.
The Two Musketeers. Low on spook factor, but high on stage presence.
Police woman. Granted, getting arrested is always a bit spooky, but we feel this is a strong case of ‘could do slightly better’, given the spooky nature of the occaision. Or to put it perhaps a little more succinctly - It’s not bloody readers wives…
The Devil. A Halloween classic & always a great one to see. Nice scrunchie Lucifer face too, he’s got the tail, the trident & even the red shoes. This is a bit more like it!
Top Gun Shade Men. What the fuck is spooky about that ?! Go to the bottom of the class…
Quality Zombie & Ghoulish Girl. This is the type of caper we are after here. He is rocking that zombie groove & she is sporting a really, really, class po face. This is top notch Halloween action, right here.
The Witch & The Escaped Convict Baby Butcherer. Well in the spirit of things, but not quite up with the potential winners on our score card.
The Bunch of Grapes. A favourite perhaps? Manages to circumnavigate his obvious lack of spookiness with originality, novelty & all that stuff. Had he just bitten the bullet & gone naked beneath the balloons…this competition would be over already!
The Enthusiastic Pumpkin. Enthusiasm is worth points in this game, as are matching shoes.
Mr Sinister. Another top quality look. It’s the eyes, he’s got them spot on & rocking in nicely, with the ever so slightly lowered jaw & fly Dracula hairline. A class act.
Mr Face Falling Off. Making good use of the classic mummy stance he definitely has something here. Slighty lets himself down though, as his blood is a bit ‘jam’.
Half a Burn Victim. Proper. One of our favourites. A fine effort that could only have been improved by him shaving his burnt arm. The little monkey type hairs he has going on there, would surely have been singed off on that side of his body during the fire..? A great effort, but unfortunately at this premier level of competition, the details matter & what’s right is right.
Miss Balderdash. Nice gothic look & an almost perfect palour of true death.
Mr Mad Make Up & Miss But is it a Costume? We think he’s come as the Joker, but just his face alone ain’t gonna win him this baby. Must try harder next time. Now she must have a hidden inner evil or something, cos we can’t see anything spooky about her at all…?
Sailor Moon. We had no idea who this was until she facebooked us to let us know the name of her character. Apparently ‘Sailor Moon’ is an anime character from comics or something, but as we don’t know much about that, we can’t really say if she is spooky, or not. It’s a tight look though, no question about that.
Zombie Eena Sharples & Zombie Hilda Ogden. Top notch, again proving spookiness can be both outshone & enhanced by enthusiasm, originality, simplicity & wit.
Blonde Witch (left) & Darker Haired Witch Chum (next to her). The boyos all get photos elsewhere, except for little bearman in the middle, who was a little bit naughty on the night & isn’t allowed to play.
Mr This is How I Normally Look. It’s the apparent comfort of the man, that appeals here, as he tinkers on with himself.
The Twins. Not that spooky, but as a photo, the background cameo of Sadaam really lifts it & kinda casts them both in a fortunately spooky light, don’t you think? On further inspection it appears, they are totally surrounded by ghouls of one sort or another. So yes, not that spooky, but the Twins show an excellent use of props to achieve a compositely spooky photographic outcome.
Mr Half a Face. A fantastic look, but we have had to convene a stewards enquiry on this one, as scrutiny of last years Halloween photo album has confirmed that this is a repeat costume…. (cue audible sighs of shock from voters..!)
With standards so high year in year out, it’s no wonder people sometimes find it hard to surpass past triumphs. But as both a Halloween culture & a Halloween cult, we must always pull together, look ahead & aspire to true innovations in spookiness year on year. We are not disqualifying him, but are just making sure all prospective voters know that he has been a little, tiny bit naughty.
Spooky, Quality Witch & Ultra Low Budget, Shaving Cut Man. She scores highly on the witchie, casting a spell with the hands stance. He however, is extremely poor! His outfit appears to comprise little more than normal clothes & a shaving cut? Not acceptable, there’s no point pleading, go & stand in the corner until we tell you you may rejoin the class…
Japanese Tentacle Porn is the name of this young lady. Very fetching. This Asian cartoon caper has entered spooky culture by the rear, we think. Werewolves, Drac, guys like that used to be the dudes. Now it’s all big eyes & super powers. Perhaps you know if she is truly spooky? We might google her, to see if we think she is…
Japanese Tentacle Porn, appears again, here with Mojo Jojo, who has his own fine snap a little further down. The real player in this pic is the guy in the middle in black, who is Aku, the Shape Shifting Master of Darkness! A Cartoon Network classic & surely registers extra votes for having the surname, ‘Of Darkness’. How much more spooky can you get..?
Popeye. Has totally missed the point… It’s not a costume if you have your name written on it! We have just checked on Cartoon Network & Popeye does not have his name on his coat. A blatant attempt to sway the public vote, bordering on a near cheat!
Mojo Jojo. Now that is quailty! the sneer, the cuffs, he’s not messing about. Popeye would do well to take a leaf out of his book!
The Egyptian. Makes good use of the classic stance & given the sublte ‘mummy to be’ overtones he is rocking, there are surely some spook points out there for him.
Mr Didn’t Really get the ‘Costume Party’ Bit. Couldn’t possibly be more lame & poor… ‘What was your costume..?’ ‘Who, me? I came as a drunken bum…’ He’s let himself down, his family down, all of his ancestors, let’s face it, he’s let us all down…
Zombie Nurse & Pumpkin Lady. Trusting that committed dance moves & diligent hair removal, can perhaps give you the edge in this kinda tense, competitive situation.
Marcel Marceaux. Spookiness bypass. We all expect a lot more from you next year.
Spiderwoman Two. That is a good look. Could have been improved with fangs, though they are there by implication on the blood on her lip. Simple, but effective.
Nimbus 2000 Broomstick. Top Marks, with excellent use of hair & physical stature.
Lady in Short Dress & Top Gunner. Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame. Far too lame for this game. If we could give you detention, we would. Now get to bed, with no supper.
Catman, Slickback & Wighead hanging out with Zombie Eena & Zombie Hilda. Spooky, odd & well into the spirit of things. Possibly meant to be Gene Simmons & co from the cock rock band Kiss?
Vampire Boy & Chums. At least Vampire Boy bothered to put a bit of Bee-ro on, barely compensating for the tragic efforts of his half arsed chums.
Ultra High Quality Zombie Maiden. Could be a tip for the top? The contact lens thing is rocking & blood coming from an eye socket at Halloween, is as we all know, always a mark of class. An early favourite, no question.
The Mask. We’ve said it before that a mask is always a cop out, but what a mask! It’s a belter & could just be the exception, that proves the rule.
Transformer. Oozes quality & though he isn’t really that spooky, can you really argue with what appears to be a penis tie…?

It’s Ok to Follow Your Heart
As day one of the competition draws to a close, we reflect…
I want thank Barry, for playing the role of ajudicator in this election yesterday.
Today is a new day & I shall be watching over it this morning & for the rest of today.
As you will doubtless be aware, I am the Godfather of Soul & cannot be messed with.
Democracy is the aim of the game & it must be served.
I have noted the networking aspects of certain costumes & whilst I do not frown upon them, I must be ever vigilant, to ensure that they do not block the true will of the people.
It’s is open season & all contenders can (& most will) do that mass canvassing thing, which is fine… However, your vote should really come from the heart…
If a friend of yours has facebooked or emailed you to ask you to vote for them specifcally in this competition, you can if you like…
But you can also look at all the other contenders too & make up your mind in your own heart, as to which is your own, actual favourite.
That is the true spirit of this special thing we are all doing here.
That’s one of the main reasons it’s so beautifully spooky x.

I am musical diva Ms Simone & I shall be herding all you spook appreciaters for the duration of today. I belieive in originality & discipline.
I am however, very accessible & I shall be happy to interact with any of you who may have questions regarding the voting, the costumes, or any other aspect of the democratic process.
I arrived late, so have not had time to look over every post that has come in so far.

Although I was more than fond of the bunch of grapes piece, and am a sucker for anything Harry Potter related (nimbus broomstick), I think it is important for us all to remember that ’spooky’ is clearly the idea we should have in mind whilst voting!!
I will, therefore, be giving 6/10 to The Obligatory Scary Clown- one word- classic!
Quality Zombie rated pretty high on my spook factor so would get a 8/10.
The enthusiastic pumpkin should get full marks for the matching shoes but overall would get a 6/10
Half a Burn Victim has clearly given this some effort!! 9/10
Mojo Jojo!!! Genius!! Has the pose down like a mother!! Well done sir! 10/10

You make a fair point, in terms of the fact that the spirit of the competition, requires at least a nod, if not a certain degree, of spookiness.
Both the former adjudicators, Barry & James, would be in agreement with you.
As the Incumbent Adjudicator, I must remain impartial.
However I must say,
(and as I am refering to last years competition here, it is allowed under electoral guidelines)
that having viewed last years winner in the World HQ Halloween 2008 facebook album, I thought the Jellyfish costume that won was actually very spooky on several levels.
When you swim & you see them in the water, they spook you out as they have a nasty sting. Had you already been stung by one on a previous occasion & you encountered another, I am sure you can imagine how spooked you might feel..?
The costume also glowed in the dark (spooky) & had a penny drops type effect, as on first glance, you couldn’t be sure what it was & it took a moment to visually process the information your eyes were getting, before you realised it is meant to be a jelly fish.
The very notion of, for example, seeing a ghost… is that you encounter something which appears to be impossible.
That is why it is spooky.
I would posit that the Jellyfish, given that is was out of water, was clearly displaying what were meant to be stinging tentacles, was in a nightclub & glowing in the dark, was spooky…. & thus a worthy Halloween winner.
It’s a small point Morg, but I thought I would share it with you.

I don’t think it is fair that the Zomble woman is on the homepage, even tho I think she looks good.
More people will see her than anyone else & that is not fair as she will get more votes.

You make an interesting point re the image on the homepage. I shall act upon your opinion.
I shall replace her with the Jellyfish, given my earlier discussions around last years winner.
I feel it will make things more democratic & provide a benchmark for comparison with this years contenders.
I don’t however think you are totally correct, as the Bunch of Grapes is well out in front of the Zombie Girl featured on the homepage at present.

To be an ajudicator on here you need to be a dead musical icon & you clearly are not one, you are a bunch of grapes.
No other costume wearer is on here crying half as much as you. In fact you are the only one who has been shedding tears of costume justification.

Please chill out & let the people decide, as by constantly coming on & ‘defending’ your outfit & vote gathering technique you are straying into tory boy territory.

If you are refering to the zombie man in the blue with all the blood, i couldn’t agree more & can’t understand why he hasn’t got more votes.
It can take time for people to realise the competition is on & that’s why it runs for over a week, to try to give everyone the opportunity to vote.
I bet that zombie guy doesn’t even know he’s up there, or at least he’da voted for himself.
We have to hope someone will tell him so he realises & rallies his troops to vote.
I think however the difference between Ultra High Quality Zombie Maiden & Lady in short dress is that UHQZM is spooky, where as LISD isn’t.
The contacts do make a difference, as does the blood coming from the eye socket.
I once saw a man killed by a bus & blood came from his eye socket & it was very spooky.
It’s the little touches that make things spooky & LISD doesn’t seem to have anything spooky going on at all. She’s more of a Moulin Rouge type vibe.
There are a lot of costumes that haven’t got what I would think they would votewise, but last year was the same.
I am confident though, that all the front runners at the moment would be worthy winners of the prize. There have been some really great outfits & ideas this year.

Thanks for all your votes over the weekend people.
Things seem to staring to level out in terms of voting frenzy. At my last brief look over the voting I think the man in the grape suit is well ahead, with the Zombie Maiden proving to be not quite as ultra high quality as him in the eyes of the voting public.
The competition shall run for a few more days to make sure everyone has a fair crack of the whip & don’t forget that one concerted late vote campaign by any of the contenders could change all of that, so it’s not over yet.

I think that is a bit of a shame as many other costumes were really good in my opinion, but may the best & most popular costume win!
