1. This weekend Tom our resident is spining the Uplifting WHQ Summer Groove.

We’ve now begun the process of updating all our Autumn shows, with welcome returns for all our heavy hitting, independent Clubnights from last season & a whole lot more diverse malarkie.

New shows confirm daily, so for all the gossip on the coming weekend, & all our other clubnights etc., see Upcoming Events. Feel free to check back & get the lowdown on all the mad exciting stuff that’s coming up this season…

2. Our Murals are one of the many things that move our Club forward & set us apart from all other places. After a Summer of planning, work has finally started on our brand new & most ambitious Mural ever…

It will go on the massive empty wall at the top of the front stairs, just outside the main doors to the upstairs Club, where the Orangutan used to hang before he moved downstairs. It shall be our finest ever work by miles & it will completely blow your mind.

It’s gonna be presented in the style of a Victorian war painting, along the lines of a ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ type vibe. It won’t however, seek to glorify the dubious & pointless activities of the nonsensical, imperialist, european armies of yesteryear…

It will instead be painted with a similar degree of detail & on a similarly massive scale, but will be a scene from nature, depicting real evolution & feature only wild animals…

At over 7 metres long & nearly 2.5 metres high it’s a big, big mural & without doubt this would be a truly massive undertaking for any talented artist. As with all murals in the Club it’ll be painted by someone who actually works here, as we never use outsiders.

The lucky (…? ask him when he’s finally finished!) chappie tasked with this epic mission is Teal Griffin, who has worked with us behind the bar at the Club for yonks.

He is the dude who painted the outstanding, massive Charles Darwin Mural inside the upstairs Club near the space invader. A photo of which you can see here below…

He also did our box office backdrop for us earlier this Summer, incorporating all our logos. That was a very constrained & linear job & was a proper pain in the arse for him to get exactly right. Lining it all up spot on took forever & we may yet tweak it even more.

This one will be much more up his street & a proper challenge for him to enjoy, far more suited to a man of his genius artistic eye & skills. The way it’s been shaping up in the planning process it’s all coming together & couldn’t really get any more organic.

We have been hanging out recently, plotting the look of it, making the plan & generally talking over the ins & outs required for the creation of this large scale, epic real life animal drama. It’s a bit like constructing a movie storyboard & is really, really exciting.

As you can see from these initial sketches we are developing, we have decided on a view of the Mara River as Zebra & Wildebeast make the annual migratory crossing.

All the other major stars on the plains will have a role to play & Lion, Hyena, Leopard, Cheetah, Vulture, Crocodile & all the gang will be in attendance. This is an A-list cast.

We have taken a lot of time (as you must if you want something like this to come off as a bomb) to research all of the headlining animals, studying David Attenborough DVDs & also a load of old 19th century war oil paintings for the style & fashion of the piece.

You would be surprised just how much background work goes into plotting this kinda mad thing, but we are certain the jaw dropping end result will more than justify it all.

This is a vision of ’survival of the fittest’ on a grand scale. It’s going to be very, very brutal indeed & depict nature at it most raw, moving, exciting, natural & meaningful.

We aim to make it even more brutal & violent than any of those 19th century war paintings, whose intricate, detailed, overblown style we’re basing it on.  What we are creating is the exact moral opposite of that Victorian fashion for using art, to glorify suffering.  This art will depict violence born of hunger, raw instinct & survival. It’s the polar opposite of self righteous imperialists, wanking off on images of war for greed.

Many of those old oil paintings have a really dramatic take on fear, transmitted best on the frantic faces & in the wide, terrified eyes of the charging cavalry horses they depict.

We’re also working on capturing that, within the eyes of our Wildebeast & Zebra cast. 

You will see this slowly take shape over the next few weeks when you visit the Club & we plan to have it completed by late September if everything goes according to plan.

One thing is certain…It will be a total show stopper & almost too amazing to believe.

We’ll whack some more photos up to show the initial progress over the coming days.

This is a chance to totally redefine the word ‘masterpiece’ & that is exactly what we plan to do. To say we are excited is a massive understatement..!!

4. Baby Ronnie the uber cute WHQ Pharoah Hound puppy now has a whole section all of her own below this one in ‘Stuff we like’.  Here she is, pretending to be all serene & not in the least bit Tasmainian Devil.

She had an operation recently at the vets & full details are now up on her page, along with her recent holiday snaps & details of  how she is recovering, growing rapidly & getting along in general.

5. This is the daftest of the crop of new flyers we have been working on for the Autumn season. It couldn’t really be more purile…

We particularly like the little poem we have written for the reverse side…

We are gonna print it on paper rather than our usual glossy card, as we felt that was more appropriate, what with all the bum references…

6. Due to popular demand we have put a small run of our WHQ Hoodies that we initially made just for ourselves, on sale in Stuff we like.

They’re top quality,  lovely & warm & a very cute look, at only £15.00 a pop.

7.  There Are Major Business Opportunities Coming Up… within our building on the upper floors, above the Club. We are on the hunt for for new people to occupy the space on the four floors above the Club.

We have now begun the pitch hearing process, so if you have a bright, preferably arts based idea (though we are open to almost anything) & could use between 3 & 6 thousand square feet of subsidused, affordable, City centre space above the Club, drop us a line.

They have gone from a tiny organisation started in Whitley Bay, to a global concern with offices all over the world & links to all the major football clubs you can think of. Every year they release a set of team photos for young fans to download, which clearly demonstrate the different Clubs support for the cause. As football is among the most racially mixed professions in the country & followed by a great many young people, this is a powerfull tool to raise conciousness with the kids.

They actively go out to local schools & do presentations & encourage young kids to debate topics around the issue of discrimination. They also hold regular family open days across the region at sports centres, where footballers will come & hold question & answer sessions, kids play 5 a side, there are trampolines, arts & crafts & all manner of stuff going on to engage the children (& their parents) in the anti racist message.

Tom our resident Dj often spins the tunes at these events & they are always a really great day out.

Along with all this they are always looking for new ways to engage & connect with people, including making movies & holding many other types of events.

We first encountered them in Holland many years ago (see History & Culture section) & have often co promoted events since then, to help raise funds & recruit volunteers to help them spread the message in schools. 

They put on three amazing comedy shows Stand Up Against Racism in Glasgow, Newcastle & London to fight the BNP as the last election was looming.

All the comedians performed for free & both nights were hilarious & runaway successes.

SRTRC are a great organisation & at WHQ we are very proud to number them among our true friends.

So, what we willl do is start at the begining & for those of you who are like us, Brian fans, please bear with us as a lot of people still are not aware of his work & we are gonna share what he means to us, with them now, to turn them on to him too.

Roxy Music.

Roxy music were not always the cod, mainstream band that they ended up as. When they first came out they were far out & totally fresh & new. When you think of them you probably think of Brian Ferry..?

But when we think of them & the records they made that we hold dear & that have truly stood the test of time, we think of Brian Eno.  As a founder member of the band, he gave them that glam, art school experimental attitude that they had in the early days when they actually mattered.

Once he left in 1973 he took the experimental vision of the band with him. He went on to change the face of modern music & art, while Mr Ferry & his chums simply plodded on towards the mainstream, eventually drifting off  into their current location, totally irrelevant in divorcee mothers day compilationland.

Post Roxy, Brian then embarked on a solo career throughout the rest of the 70’s, recording arty type albums & stuff that was always interesting, far out & experimental.

Our favourite album from around this period is called ‘Another Green World’.

We listen to it every day in Summertime every year & have heard it thousands of times with out ever tiring of it. It’s totally beautiful & unlike anything else you will ever hear.

Brian is a rubbish singer & he sings on a lot of his early albums in a way that makes them sound really odd, but he’s a genius, so he’s allowed.

Ambient Music.

Ambient music, as a concept, is something that kids like Aphex Twin & numerous other people have made wads of money from in recent years.

It was Brian Eno who single handedly pioneered this genre in the 70’s.

His masterworks in this field include the seminal ‘Ambient one : Music for Airports’ & ‘ Ambient two : The Plateaux of Mirror’ which also features piano by Harold Budd.

These are essential records & if you do not own them you are only living half a life. Of the two, Plateaux of Mirror is our favourite & we listen to it at least once every day & have done since it came out.

Both are as ignorable as they are listenable & provide the ulimate, in calm, reflective music, that probably would be pigeonholed as ’chill out’ were these outstanding records released  today.

They paint our world & colour our lives, they also calm excited animals & they soothe your soul. Brian did a lot more ambient works, collaborating with many great artists, but we are not overstating things when we say we could not live without these two particular recordings.

We have literally heard them thousands & thousands of times & will continue to listen to them, daily, most probably right up until the day we die.

Bowie.

Brian worked with David Bowie on some of his finest albums, Low, Heroes  & Lodger. He didn’t do all the production on them, but he contributes to them greatly & his infuence is quite literally all over them.

Low especially can only really be seen as a Bowie/Eno album, such is the influence of Brian on it. Brian brought new sound treatments & joined the dots between the experimental Berlin sounds of bands like Kraftwerk & David’s mad take on things. These are some of the best records ever made.

The group of artists involved these recordings included the revolutionary guitar players Robert Fripp & Adrian Belew who crop up throughout Brian’s work around this time & during the Talking Heads period.

Talking Heads.

For many people this band were their first concious point of contact with Brian. From the late 70’s he’d produced Talking Heads albums including the seminal ‘Fear of Music’ which includes ‘Life During Wartime’ a WHQ anthem.

But it was with ‘Remain in Light’ in 1980 that with Brian’s production guidance, Talking Heads hit the point of superstardom.

As a record it was just so different to anything that had ever gone before…

Brian was producing like a fiend at this point & took the band into a multilayered world of African type beats & stunningly mindblowing intricate funk. The crazy thing was, he created it all by layering beats & rhythmic patterns in a quite simplistic type of way, with a result that is earthshatteringly complex & mad astonishing.

Everyone knows the biggest hit from the album ‘Once in a Lifetime’ & if you go & listen to it again now, with fresh ears, it’s hard to imagine any way it could be improved upon even now, with all the technology that exists 30 whole years since it’s release date. 

Other tracks like ‘Born under Punches’ & ‘The Great Curve’ just add to & take this record & Brian’s production of it into hyperspace. As with so many of the projects Brian has been involved in, he colaborates with the band on the production duties, acting as judge & catalyst to make the magic happen.

Go & play Remain In Light today & you’ll be stunned. When you do, make sure you keep an ear open for ‘Listening Wind’ on there too, which given the current state of the Middle East now, three decades later, is so prophetic as to be bonafide spooky…

Other colaborations.

Brian has also produced & conrtributed to the careers of many other artists as diverse as Robert Fripp, Devo & Grace Jones.

He produced all of U2’s best albums & more recently the Coldplay bedwetters had their musical credibility restored by the magical hand of Saint Brian.

So even though you may not have known it, you probably already dig Brian’s work.

The Clock of the Long Now.

A few years ago we saw an interview with Brian where he was discussing his involvement with a clock that was being built. We think it was in Greenwich somewhere that it was located..? It was called the Clock of the Long Now.

He was explaining that it wasn’t going to measure time in just the normal denominations that we are all used to, like minutes, hours & days. Instead it was to be in years & decades, right up to millenia. The idea was to challenge the kind of short term thinking we have so much of today, where people get bored if they have to focus on anything longer than the length of a pop video.

He made the point that few people think beyond the life of a government & that this was a major factor in our destruction of the natural environment. Thinking & living in the moment has it’s advantages at times, but as a collection of cultures, the western world is consuming all the Planet’s resources at an unsustainable rate. The idea of the Clock was to encourage a more balanced view of time & context in all our lives.

It was an interesting concept, he put the idea over very well & it made a big impact on us.

77 Million Paintings.

This was the first time we had seen Brian exhibit work in Newcastle. He brought his 77 Million Paintings Exhibition to the Baltic a couple of years ago. It was without question the single most beautiful thing we have ever seen in our entire lives.

We sat all day watching it slowly change & it blew our minds. The idea behind harnessing computers to the end of creating beauty sounds stupid. But it isn’t. He toured the World with this exhibition & you couldn’t help but be astounded by it.

It’s a shame the Baltic couldn’t have shown it longer & also a shame that as with so many of  exhibitions they have there, they simply relied on the artists name to sell it & didn’t put the hustle into the promotion that the show merited. As a result we felt it wasn’t properly advertised, so more ordinary people (as in, people not on the Baltic mailing list,  or ‘luvvie’s’ involved in the arts etc) from the city had no idea how breathtakingly spectacular it was & also had no idea it was on. 

Sure it was a success for the Baltic, but we felt it could have reached a lot more people. If you didn’t see it that’s a real shame & that also illustrates the point we are making re the lack of appropriate promotion around it. 

The day we saw 77 Million Paintings we were truly amazed & we changed a little bit.

The i phone applications.

With the advent of the i Phone all kinds of people are making applications to go with it. As you would imagine, Brian is bang on it & even though we dislike technology for technology’s sake, that fact he has got involved with it encouraged us to get one.

His Apps include ‘Bloom’ &‘ Trope’. If you have an i phone download them both & they will change your life. They cost about £2.00 each.

He has harnessed the power of music & computers in an astoundingly simple & interactive way. You can make your own music at the touch of a button & loop it endlessly. You end up creating soundscapes that you have never heard before, or will hear again, all with your finger, on your phone.

It’s chill out tastic & has revolutionised bathtime round our way…

In the same vein as his life changing ambient works we mentioned earlier, this is the absolute bomb & an added plus is that the animals in your life will thank you for it too. Infinite relaxing, original art at your fingertips, forever..!

The Attitude of the man.

So as you have probably now gathered, we are into Brian Eno. He is our favourite artist because has done so many meaningful, special & wonderful things. Alongside all that he has been an open & assertive critic of the Iraq war, highlighting his willingness to speak out about political issues & wrong doing that effects us all.

The inspiration he has single handedly given us is immesaurable. He taught us to appreciate true beauty in art & music, taught us the value of working & collaborating with talented people & helped us to believe that we could do things our own way without paying any attention to what other people thought was right or acceptable. 

We were extatic to see that BBC 4 recently devoted a whole night to him & if you have access to getting programmes on playback, seek him out. There is a lovely quote in there something along the lines of…

‘When I was young I didn’t wish to fit into standard career paths & aim to be like other people, so instead of aiming for what they aimed for, I just shot my arrow & drew my own target, around where it landed…’

That attitude is how we live too, it’s infectious & has led us to think outside the box & truly interpret the world in our own way, rejecting the mainstream & going instead with our own unique ideas & traditions. That is how the Club was built… 

The ability to take time to use integrity & ideas to create, enjoy & share beauty & then stick to giving that more merit than authority, or what people may percieve as the current fashion or ’must obey’ rules of today, is (not just a ridiculously long sentence, it’s also) the very the heart of all Brian’s amazing art & at the heart of World Headquarters Club too. 

That attitude is his gift… Not only to us, but also to you, if you simply take time to seek out & connect with any of his outstanding work.

In the same way James Brown was (& maybe even more so…) Brian Eno is the Man.

Here at World Headquarters, we have a long history of using a variety of animals in our publicity, so we thought it was about time we got us a mascot.

This is our little baby,  Ronnie. She is a Pharoah Hound puppy & will be featuring on many of our flyers from now on. Above is her hanging with the 13 other members of her litter, not long after she was born. Below is the first snap we took of her once we got her home, in bed, taken at the end of January.

As you can see here she is still just a little baby, but she’ll grow, along with the Club, over the next 15 or so years.

Her ears (which as you can see in the photo above were all floppy…) suddenly started to stand up like some kind of crazy & astonishing bat… This happened one ear at a time (as demonstrated in these photos below, taken in the first week of February).

First it was her right ear…

But her left stayed all floppy…

When we got home at last one night, from our weekends shenanigans, we were very pleased to see that her second ear was playing ball & had just started to stand up. Her first one was now up like a proper batwing & for a moment we thought the second one might not go for it… But, check this snap taken at 6.30 on a Sunday morning!! (February 7th),  hilarious!

This is one of her really early snaps, pre batlugs… 

Here she is on one of her first trips out, sporting her rather fetching little jerkin that she wore, as she was little & did not have any fat to keep the cold out.

In just a few weeks she went from this little cheeky individual pictured here…

To the stately young hound pictured here, monkeying around at the beach…

She has sprouted up & it seems like you can almost see her growing.

She just gets longer & longer every day & has developed a kinda weird, long necked, mountain lionesque look, which you can see her rocking in this little snap below…

She was now eating so much, we thought it was time she started work to earn her keep. So this was her first modelling assignment, starring in our April advertisment in the Crack Magazine.

She enrolled in puppy school for a few weeks with all her doggie chums. Here she is being bad, trying to eat out of a bin when she should be getting ready…

Her puppy classes were at Croft Medical Centre in Cramlington, where she hooked up with all her pals. They are really good classes & if you are thinking of getting a puppy, you should check them out.

She loved it & won an award for ‘Most Playful Puppy’ when she graduated.

She had such a great time that she is now weighing up her options & is considering staying in further education & taking an agility class.

This was her second modelling job, for the front of one of our Summer flyers.

She can be such a little naughty, but she is also such a complete cutie & we all just love her to bits x.

Chapter two - Growing up, traumas & travels…

One of Ronnie’s favourite places is the woods. She is a hound so she just loves the whole outdoors groove.

She regularly goes on epic walks to far away places where she can run wild & free & just enjoy being an active young dog, out & about in nature.

Summer has been good & Ronnie has been up on the Northumberland moors.

She really is growing up & is starting to lose a little of her puppy face & evolving into a really beautiful elegant girl. She seems to look like different things at different times, but most often she looks like a little kind of pointy eared deer.

Here she is doing her ‘Queen of all I survey’ routine up in the mountains…

When she was little she hated water, but now mainly by copying from behaviour she has seen other dogs exhibit, she has got over that & has a paddle & even a swim if it’s nice & sunny, to cool off while she is out on her important manouvers.

At around 6 months, we decided to take Ronnie to the Vet to have her spayed. She was from a litter of 14 & as there is no way we could look after that many dogs, we thought it was best. Her pups would have sold for a small fortune, but we aren’t into that & wouldn’t have been able to bear seperating her from them, so off we went. First, the Vet shaved her leg…

Then her tummy & made this great big cut & took out all of her reproductive bits…

Looks gruesome, but it’s astounding how quickly she recovered & was up & around within a day. She got a little bit of an infection in her wound, but the Vet gave her some bomb antibiotics & she was right back on form & running around off her lead within a week or so.

Now her scar has healed to the point where you can hardly see it & all her hair has grown back.

At same time the last of her little needle teeth fell out & all her big, grown up teeth came in. What a fine set of pearly white gnashers she has!

She utilises them for the destruction of her toys & anything else she can get her sticky little mits on.

Here she is performing her speciality trick of getting a squeaky toy, then disemboweling it to remove all the stuffing, to get at the little plastic squeaker inside.

In July she went to Suffolk on her holidays camping. The weather was boiling hot & she had a good root around the countryside. She was up first thing crack of dawn & on the go all day.

She camped on a working farm & met all the animals like dogs, horses, cats, chickens, pigs & a litter of 8 black labrador puppies like this little guy.

It was a great experience for her that really broadened her horizons & she just ran around exploring all day, trying to hunt for things to chase, or to chase her.

She got a new collar so she would be all smart for her holidays & she wore it when she went to the beach.

She had a running feud with the cows out the back of where she camped as they laughed at her ears, so she decided to go on a concerted program of mashing them up at every possible opportunity.

She also went to the massive forest & messed on with great big pine cones, which is one of her favourite things to do.

There are so many different natural enviroments in Suffolk that it’s doggie paradise. She went to swamps, beaches, fields, forests, bars, everywhere.

The countryside caper wore her out & she liked to settle in at night for a great big nap. She got a big cage specially for her holidays so that she wouldn’t wander off every night & eat all the animals on the farm. She absolutely loved it & at the end of each day she would go in for her nap & we would cover it with blankets. So she was all in the dark like a little parrot & had her own proper little warm snugglie den, to camp in.

Now she is back from her hols so you may see her on her walks out & about around Newcastle. Be sure to stop her & say hello if you do, as she is the the most friendly dog you could possibly hope to meet & would love show you a demonstration of  how to wag a tail properly.

You all know Spike, the black film director who shot to fame with his breakthrough movie ‘She’s Gotta Have It’.  (As with all Spike’s movies- haven’t seen it…? see it!)

He went on to make amazing & important inspirational films including ‘Malcolm X’ & the iconic ‘Do the Right Thing’.

Well, in between all the amazing stuff he has done that you know about, is tucked away this little gem of a movie…

It came out at the same time ‘Home Alone’ was released & it seemed at the time, that this movie was overlooked, in part because of that.

This was also maybe due to the contrasting storylines, as Home Alone was the story of a rich little white kid & his family, whereas Crooklyn is the story of a poor little black kid & her family.

Also the very name ‘Crooklyn’, at the time, maybe made people who take things on face value (ie. the majority of the cinema going public), think it was some some kinda gangster movie..?

Nothing could be further from the truth & if you get a chance to see it, take our advice & do.

You will be deeply, deeply, touched by it. It’s a stunning piece of work & maybe a contender as the first occasion a black family has been properly represented in cinema.

This movie is a total masterpiece & it’s soundtrack is also stupid good & features loads of the rarer tunes played at the Club on a weekend.

It’s a simple story set on an interracial block of brownstone New York houses, in Brooklyn in the 1970’s. The attention to detail, from the music, to the toys the kids play with, is far out & it totally captures the 70’s vibe in a way that is gimmick free & smack on the money.

All the characters are highly developed & totally believable & we doubt you’ll see a better, or more emotive representation of family life anywhere else, by any other director, ever.

We won’t spoil it for you with the storylines, but we can say it’s just basically about kids, being kids & growing up in relative poverty, told from the perspective of a little girl in a large family of brothers.

The main thing that will blow your mind is the performances… All the actors are outstanding, but all the child actors are both hilarious, touching & quite simply out of this world.

To compare any of their performances to that McCauly Whatshisname in Home Alone, would be really ridiculous, as he is not even in the same ball park.

When you see it, you will get what we mean, you will know & you will also wonder just how come you had never heard of this truly amazing & life enriching, piece of art..?

So, as we reckon few of you may have seen this movie already, we recommend it to you with all our heart.

Watch it & see for yourself. Stories really can be this beautiful & talented black actors can get ignored at times & their outstanding work lay unappreciated, as fashion favours sugary yarns of panto kids, with scripted Hollywood twaddle, big budgets & blonde hair.

So, expand your mind & make sure you seek out & share in this touching, once in a lifetime experience.

We would like you to know that we have been meaning to write something about Crooklyn on our site for ages & these words have not been scribbled down at some time, moments after just after we have watched it. However writing them, has reminded us of how amazing this movie is & we are gonna go watch it again tomorrow!

If you stand at the bar, upstairs in WHQ & look up, to your extreme right…There is a photo of Spike Lee watching over the Club. We had this photo up at the Old Club (see History & Culture) & Spike has overseen proceedings in WHQ since day one.

In terms of the Club, we stand on his shoulders & without his influence & this movie, goodness knows how we would have percieved the world when we were growing up, being involved in musical business & raising families.

Friday night entry is just £5.00 before 11.30pm, then £6.00 members, £7.00 guests.

We are licensed for both alcohol & dancing until 5am & we never close before 4am.
